Regardless of your preferred genres of music or movies, our “Q’s” for today are some of the most well-renowned, talented and industry changing people in their respective disciplines. And while I applaud their respective resumes, it’s the audacity and confidence by which they carried out their work that I think is most compelling, especially as it relates to the last “Q” in this week’s article, quality of character.

Enter: Queen & Quentin Tarantino

Alright, Mike. Now you’ve done it – are you implying I let the inmates run the asylum? Salespeople can be hard enough to wrangle in, remember?!

In a way, it’s exactly what I am implying. If you think about Queen for a moment – just 3 of their many songs – We Will Rock You, We are the Champions, and Another One Bites the Dust – all have a toe-tapping, hand-clapping brazenness that is hard to ignore. But guess what else? They are extremely memorable. They are the kinds of songs that you can’t get out of your head and that get passed on from generation to generation because their message and melody are timeless.

Would you use any of these adjectives when describing your company culture? Is that because there is only one personality (yours) contributing to what it is day-in and day-out? And here’s a thought – what kind of impact might it have on your sales if your team made meaningful contributions to the quality of your culture, making it memorable for them and for you? Hmmm…

As for Mr. Tarantino, I know, there is a love-hate relationship with his films, and they can be a bit much, especially in mixed audiences. But it’s not the content that’s important here, it’s the approach. He took the traditional film approach, chronological order, and flipped it on its ear. His out-of-sequence tendencies gave viewers a whole new perspective on looking at the same thing, a film. My point is that the film industry had to embrace something different as he brought his films to light, a brand-new spin on the same old thing. I’d encourage you to think about that as your culture evolves, people come and go, but your culture can be both memorable and timeless. If you allow it to.
