Fractals are infinitely complex, never-ending patterns that are self-similar across different scales. They are driven by recursion and are images of dynamic systems, in short, pictures of chaos. Or maybe said differently, another way to describe the human race.

Alright, Mike! What is this now, a lesson in science and nature? Isn’t this supposed to be about sales and helping my sales team?

Like always, I ask you bear with me. Simply put, people, and the chaos that comes with them are at the heart of your sales efforts, and your team.

Enter: The Shack & Sarayu

As much of the world now knows, Wm. Paul Young released his New York Times best-seller, The Shack in 2007. Not being much of a fiction reader these days, it took me until this year to sit down and read it. I couldn’t put it down. Not only was it a spiritual shower and mental retreat all wrapped into a single weekend, it was a revolutionary way to consider the relationship between God and mankind. And equally important, between people. The book was about relationships, the importance of them, and the truly wonderful and chaotic nature of human beings as individuals.

So, why does this matter to your sales and your team? Because, fellow leader, fellow human- your team and your prospects are all people first. What’s more, as Sarayu puts it, they are all wonderfully beautiful fractals that all interact with one another. I’m not trying to get all “theological and cerebral” on you as their leader, but this is some of the simplest truth you will ever find in a chaotic and demanding business world. And here’s a bonus, it’s a truth you can rely on. If you stay mindful of the people you encounter inside and outside of your business day, if you listen, learn and adjust to them, you interactions will not only be more beneficial to your business, they will be more meaningful to you.

One last point. Remember yourself in all of this. Being considerate to others is important but being considerate to yourself is also important. Remember to take time to be fulfilled in what you do and keep real meaning in your business day. It will shine through in your actions and you will be happier.
