Since I beat the drum fairly loudly about the “W” wellness in this week’s article, I wanted to make sure there was a light side to focusing on the well-being of your team. I like the old Jimmy Buffet lyric in the song “Fruitcakes” that goes, “I treat my body like a temple. You treat yours like a tent.” While I am not a proponent of reckless abandonment (necessarily) when indulging, I must admit that sometimes the things that can be bad for you, like a cheeseburger and fries, can simply do something for the soul that a vegetable cannot.

Enter: Willie Nelson & Whataburger

Old Willie. He’s known for his lyrics, he’s known for his womanizing, he’s known for his tax evasion, pot smoking and outlaw ways. But even if you aren’t a country music fan, you have to admit that Willie’s tunes and his lyrics speak to just about everyone in some way. But to know him as he is today, that ruffian outlaw that blazes his own trail is what makes Willie, Willie. Guess what? If you searched for early images of him in the very beginning of his career, you’d find a clean-shaven, short-haired man that looked more like a 50’s rock-n-roll star than any cowboy or outlaw you’ve ever known.

So, why is it relevant? Because Willie chose to do things his way as he crafted himself inside in his profession. What’s more, the music industry didn’t have much of a choice other than to let him. In essence, he thrived because he inserted himself, his true persona, into his work. And he created the icon we know today as the outlaw ballad singer. He’s also done a few things to disrupt country music itself, needless to say, crossing over racial lines, music genre lines, and creating a new image of what it means to be “country”. What if your sales team had that kind of autonomy? What if they had that kind of impact inside your organization? Where might you be today as a company?

And as for the Whataburger. Well I must admit, I have had my fair share of burgers over the years, despite my knowing better, and my waistline hangs on to it more and more. But you haven’t lived if you haven’t had a traditional Whataburger. So, the next time the chips are down, and your team needs some wellness from a comfort food perspective, find the nearest location to you and your team, and indulge. If it were me, I’d have old Willie on in the background to boot. Nothing says wellness like a delicious burger, a cold beer and a nostalgic country ballad!
